An aggregate picture, without a single name. Everything on this page is totals and percentages added up on the realm side and published already summed: no character roster gets downloaded here to draw two bars.

Nobody appears here by name
The census is aggregation only: how many, in what proportion and since when. We do not publish character or account names, which characters belong to the same person, zones, gold, or when anyone logs in. A small realm where everybody knows each other is exactly where that detail does harm.
Split
How the population is distributed
Each block has a minimum number of characters below which it is not drawn, and that minimum does not live on this page: it lives in the data. The realm does not publish a split that has not reached its threshold, so there is no way to show “100% Paladin” over two characters here, not even through a coding mistake.
Alliance and Horde
The split of created characters, always as a percentage and never as an absolute number. It does the one thing it should: help you pick a side knowing where people are.
Class, race and level
The fine-grained split needs a bigger sample than the faction one: with few characters, saying “33% are hunters” describes one specific person, not a realm.
Population
How many people there are, day by day
The real curve, dips included. Everybody assumes a private realm lies about its population, and the only possible answer to that is publishing the whole series and explaining how it is measured.

How this is calculated
The sums are done on the realm side and a single document of a few hundred bytes is published. Your browser never downloads one row per character.
The census is rebuilt every ten minutes. If the last aggregation is more than thirty minutes old, this page stops serving the splits instead of serving them with a footnote.
Population is sampled every thirty seconds and accumulated into hourly buckets. If the realm does not answer, nothing is recorded: a zero written out of ignorance poisons forever a curve that cannot be rebuilt backwards.
The publishing thresholds live in the data, not on this page: the realm does not publish a block that has not reached the minimum. It is the only way a rushed deploy cannot show a split that means nothing.
Percentages are rounded to whole numbers and the two faction bars complement each other, so they add up to exactly 100 without touching any figure.
What you will never see here
Character or account names. The census is pure aggregation.
Which characters belong to the same account. It is the most requested armory feature and the most harmful.
Anyone’s zone, position, gold, login or logout time.
A split below its threshold, not even “just to show something”.
A filler zero where a reading is missing. No data is said as no data.
